The “Hanky Code” is a traditional form of signaling to others what your sexual preferences and interests are. Gay men used this code to communicate with each other in the noisy and distracting environment of gay bars during the late 60s, 70s and even the 80s. The hanky code also allowed gay men to communicate with each other without attracting attention, and allowed men to more easily scope out potential dates. As more people came out the code became more obsolete. BUT, I for one am noticing the renewed interest in this mode of advertising. Let’s face it, the majority of us do not want to talk and get to know each other.
